Comes to life with you ln the middle of the action
The latest technology will be in your living room. Based in a large part on an intuitive breakthrough by researcher Johnny Chung Lee, the wii console has the potential to put you literally in the middle of the game.
Wii 3d
The wii revolutionized the video game industry by introducing an active component. Other manufacturers have quickly followed suit. New input devices have led to games ranging from wii tennis to the incredibly popular rock band game.
The first stage in this evolution in gaming, was of course the introduction of controllers that allow the player to physically move within their own environment. The next logical progression is to make the player appear as though they were in the game. This seemed like a huge leap to make, certainly not the sort of technology that would appear in a console game for a couple of hundred dollars. It seemed as though the future was as distant as the holodeck. At least until Johnny Chung Lee came along.
This talk he gave for the Ted conference shows not just the gaming applications but a number of real world applications this technology involves. It also gives a sneak preview of some of this technology that has actually been slipped into some computer game programs that are currently on the market.
Its a revolutionary system, that does things like track your position and adjust the graphics directly to where you are standing in the room. If you are playing a baseball game, you would be able to literally chase the ball around the room and catch it while it is in flight. The possibilities are endless.
Truly we are one step closer to the ultimate fantasy, the room that would be impossible to leave, the holodeck that is reality.
Other advances in 3d gaming technology
Virtual optics
Advances in virtual lenses can create the illusion of a full size movie theater by projecting images onto a screen inside a pair of glasses. Advances in rendering technology can bring virtual worlds to light with a realistic precision never before imagined
Headgear
Full immersion requires gaming headgear, advanced models can create sound, temperature and even olfactory stimulations.
Video Glasses
Video glasses, mirror shades, and other technologies can render data overlays onto a video screen. There are products which render scenes by directly stimulating the optic nerve with laser light.
Cyber Deck
The ultimate immersion tool. First visualized by William Gibson in the novel neuromancer, a cyber deck plugs directly into the brain and works directly on the neural circuitry so that the video game experience transforms into something much more akin to reality. Recent advances in this technology include both hard neural adaptors and surface feedback stimulation. Advances in biological circuits overlayed on silicone surfaces may make an effective direct neural interface possible.
Fully Immersed Gaming
The elements of the 3-d gaming universe are changing from you watching the action on the screen to you participating in the action in intense full immersion virtual action.
